Meet Britny Bensman, Deaf Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Britny Bensman is a deaf licensed practical nurse (LPN) working in the emergency room. She has plans to obtain her RN certification in the fall of 2022. Bensman stated that the majority of her deafness is positive. There were some negative issues here and there but Britny’s natural response is to try to turn the negatives into positives.

Bensman is the founder of DeafMed to help those who are deaf or hard of hearing excel in the medical field. DeafMed is a result of her love for medicine/science. “After I became a medical assistant, knowing there were not many resources and connections, I knew I needed to start something. Something I’ve been wanting to do and here it is. DeafMed is still growing and I’m just taking it one year at a time and see where this will lead me,” said Bensman.

“Many reached out saying ‘I can’t’ so many times. This is where I found the true motto. ‘Change your can’t to can’. I cannot tell you how many people reached back out saying things like ‘I passed, thank you for believing in me,’” said Bensman. Bensman explains to not put the hearing losses in front of others as doing so can prevent them from going forward.

Bensman enjoys being able to be herself and communicating in both English and American Sign Language (ASL). Bensman has overcome communication barriers by the use of clear masks, writing things down, texting, and sometimes pulling masks down to allow her to read their lips. Some of her coworkers learned ASL to help communicate.

Bensman recommends if you want to be this or that in the healthcare field, go for it! “We’ve all been in your shoes and you’re not alone. There are plenty of resources out there and we are here to help you. If I can do it, if they can do it… then YOU can do it,” explained Bensman. Bensman always tell others to be you!

Safe’N’Clear is proud to select Britny Bensman as the Deaf Leader for August, 2022.
